Field Day 2023
ARRL Field Day 2023 was June 24th and 25th and ran 24 hours from 1pm Saturday to 1pm Sunday. We were at Bickham Rudkin Park which is on 33rd Street east of Boulevard. We were class 3A on generator and battery power for the duration.
First of all I would like to thank each of you for helping make Field Day 2023 a success! It takes a number of people to put on an event like this and many of you were there to help set up, operate, tear down and spend time together. I appreciate every one of you.
As you know, we were in a new location this year. The tradeoff of being outside in this park instead of the air conditioning at the fire station is that we were very visible to the public. I know of at least a couple of people who wandered in to see what we were doing. There were some misconceptions I was able to clear up and give a few people a better understanding of what we do. By the way, we weren’t just preparing for a zombie apocalypse…
We even had a visitor all the way from Alabama. He was in Stillwater for a friend’s wedding and he heard traffic on our repeater Saturday morning. He looked us up, found our field day site and drove down for a couple of hours.
Looking at the sign-in sheet, we had about 50 people come out at some point. I am pretty sure not everyone signed in so we had more than 50. We even had our Oklahoma Section Manager Mark Kleine, N5HZR, visit Saturday night.
I have exported log data from Field Day so here is a brief summary. This is very preliminary and does not reflect all of the bonus points and extra multipliers that are available. Plus I am pretty sure there at least a couple of duplicates due to the way FT8 logs contacts.
CW – 162
Digital (FT8 and FT4) – 501
Phone – 563
Total – 1,226
I would like to thank Ethan, KI5VME, for staying all night and working digital with me. He kept right on trucking even when I kept dozing off while making FT8 contacts on 80m.
We also gathered for dinner Saturday evening. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us. Our next club dinner will be in August.
We will find a time in a couple of weeks to meet and have a post-event discussion. We are very interested in hearing feedback. You are welcome to share your comments at any time by sending them to fieldday@k5eok.org. I am also available for phone calls if you would prefer.
Saturday morning Fox 25 was on site. A journalist was on site for probably 40-45 minutes capturing video of our Field Day set up. We were still setting up but he did a great job capturing the essence of what we were doing and why. Please take a look when you have a minute. It can be difficult to get media coverage like this so I am very thankful for them making the effort to share our story.

Field Day 2022
In honor of recognition of our service to the city of Edmond, EARS was presented with a proclamation from Edmond mayor Darrell Davis declaring the week of June 20 to June 27, 2022 as “Amateur Radio Week.” A copy of the proclamation is available at the link below.
Field Day 2021
Watch for our official results in the December 2021 QST magazine!
This year we were unsure if we would be allowed to use the Edmond Fire Department facility but the COVID 19 new infection rate dropped drastically and our request was granted! We quickly began making plans and held our event. As a result of the uncertainty we only operated 4A and without a club dinner. Visitation was depressed by heavy rainfall, flooding, power outages etc that occurred throughout the weekend. We were off-air from 4 AM to 5:30 AM Sunday due to nearby lightning.
Field Day 2020
Due to the COVID 19 pandemic we each operated from home and submitted results as individuals. ARRL published our club aggregate score in the December QST under “Edmond ARS” with 17 entries and 12,422 points.
Field Day 2019
Score: 8,454 with 2,050 QSO’s and 89 participants!
In a week of rain we had a weekend with sunshine! We were also visited by KWTV News 9 and the Edmond Mayor! This year we had computers purchased from The City of Stillwater and several radios from club members. We also used the Arduino satellite rotor controller and for the first time we added a dedicated 2M VHF SSB station. For digital we used FT8 and PSK31.
K5EOK did very well:
- 7A: 1st in Oklahoma, 1st in ARRL West Gulf Division, 2nd in the U.S. and Canada out of 19 entries;
- All Classes: 1st in Oklahoma out of 24 entries;
- All Classes: 4th West Gulf Division out of 206 entries;
- All Classes: 53rd in U.S and Canada out of 3,112 entries
Well Done!

Our first year as 7A and we held the largest Field Day in Oklahoma! Most of our participants came Saturday during the great weather but Sunday starting at 3 AM we had to go off-air dur to nearby lightning. We ended up having to go off air a few more times Sunday briefly. A line of thunderstorms kept generating to our North West and it kept producing storms and sending them our way. We accomplished (5) satellite SSB contacts using the Arduino Satellite rotor controller! We used PSK31 and RTTY for digital.
K5EOK did very well:
- 7A: 1st in Oklahoma, 1st in West Gulf Division, 7th overall out of 20 entries
- All Classes: 2nd in Oklahoma out of 29 entries behind K5CM 2A effort.
- All Classes: 9th in West Gulf Coast Division out of 179 entries.
- All Classes: 9th in West Gulf Division out of 189 entries.

The Daily Oklahoman ran an article on us in every city newspaper the week of but we didn’t have any non-hams come by. This year a tropical storm landed in Louisiana and brought cold air down to us and provided some cloud cover – so the high was 80 degrees and the night time low was 68! Days before FD the forecast was 50% storms but thankfully it didn’t happen (sprinkled for 5 minutes)! We did hear a lot of lightning crashes in the night hours. We used PSK31 and tried JT65 however communicating/receiving the exchange was tricky.
