How to Get Your Amateur Radio License

Getting your amateur radio (ham radio) license is easier than you might think—and it opens the door to a fun, rewarding hobby that also serves the community.

Whether you’re interested in emergency communications, public service, weather spotting, or just talking with people around the world, this guide will walk you through the process.

📡 Why Get a Ham Radio License?

Amateur radio allows you to:

  • Communicate locally, regionally, and worldwide without relying on the internet or cell networks
  • Assist during emergencies and severe weather events
  • Participate in public service events and community activities
  • Experiment with radio technology and antennas
  • Connect with other radio enthusiasts

🪪 The Three License Classes

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issues three levels of amateur radio licenses. Each level builds on the previous one.

1. Technician Class (Entry Level)

The Technician license is where most people start.

What you can do:

  • Use local repeaters (like the EARS repeaters)
  • Communicate across town, county, and region
  • Participate in nets and emergency communications

What it takes:

  • Pass a 35-question multiple-choice exam
  • No Morse code required
  • Basic knowledge of radio operation, rules, and safety

2. General Class (Intermediate)

The General license expands your privileges significantly.

What you can do:

  • Talk across the United States and around the world (HF bands)
  • Participate in contests and long-distance communications

What it takes:

  • Must already hold a Technician license
  • Pass a 35-question exam
  • Deeper knowledge of radio theory and operating practices

3. Amateur Extra Class (Advanced)

The Amateur Extra license is the highest level.

What you can do:

  • Access all amateur radio frequencies and privileges
  • Use exclusive frequency segments (great for contesting and DXing)

What it takes:

  • Must already hold a General license
  • Pass a 50-question exam
  • More advanced electronics and operating knowledge

🧭 What Order Do I Take the Tests?

Licenses must be earned in order:

  1. Technician → General → Amateur Extra

However, you can take multiple exams at the same test session if you’re prepared. Many people pass Technician and General on the same day.

📝 How to Get Licensed

Here’s the basic process:

  1. Study for the exam
A great resource is the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), which offers books, study guides, and online tools.
  2. Take a practice test
Free online practice exams help you prepare and build confidence.
  3. Attend a license exam session
Exams are administered by certified Volunteer Examiners (VEs).
  4. Pass your exam
Once you pass, your license is issued by the FCC, and you’ll receive your callsign.

📍 Testing and Classes with EARS

The Edmond Amateur Radio Society (EARS) is here to help you get started.

  • Monthly VE Test Sessions
EARS offers amateur radio license testing each month. These sessions are open to anyone looking to earn or upgrade their license.
